Blood grouping

Saturday, 30 June 2007

Apparently there’s this new rule that if you’re leaving the country, they need to know your blood group.

I had received a call from my school about 2 days ago asking me for mine, since I’m going for the Poly Forum. I didn’t know it. It was written down somewhere when I took my thalassaemia test a few years back but the records appear to be lost.

I headed to the polyclinic this morning. They took $10, my identity card and about an inch of my blood in a test-tube. A part of my brain blanked out when I first saw the (very sharp) needle. The other part was trying to figure out why I was letting some stranger jab it into my arm.

I won’t know the results for a week. Not really helpful, since they need it by Monday (or so they say). Not really my fault, they could have told me to get the test earlier.

There wouldn’t be this problem if my blood group had been printed on my identity card.

It used to be a requirement to have our blood group on our identity cards but somehow was phased out by the time I was born. Is it just a sneaky way for the government to save costs? My father thinks that they should make blood group testing optional (cost borne by the patient’s parents) at birth. I don’t know if there is such an option currently but if there isn’t, it would be more helpful than not.

Dead-end hobby? Who cares

Thursday, 28 June 2007

DJ-ing makes me happy.

I’m in a different world where I’m in control of how the puzzle fits together, figuring out how to keep the connection between songs. I don’t think of anything else, just the music blasting, one hand on the vinyl, the other on the fader.

I want to be a better DJ. No money for that though, equipment’s too expensive. If someone bought me Serato, I’d probably get everything else myself. But not right now… I’m still saving for my trip.

I’ve always wanted to play some sort of musical instrument and it seems that it might be the turntables (does that count?). I know it sounds like a silly choice of hobby… My parents probably wouldn’t understand it the most due to the cost.

I don’t think I can even meet a good amateur standard for a while yet and that’s okay with me. I just found something I like doing and I want to keep doing it for as long as I can. This probably won’t be the last such decision I make.

Social entrepreneurship

I was nominated for the Poly Forum 2007 by the DJ club officer. I spent the last week attending a few of their meetings. I actually had no idea what this whole thing was about before I turned up for the initial briefing. What happens is that us students from the 5 different polytechnics in Singapore (SP, TP, RP, NP and NYP) discuss issues and think of solutions for them.

My initial thoughts were that this was going to be the most boring thing I’ve done yet. I changed my mind when I found out my sub-theme was Social Entrepreneurship, which is something I actually have some interest in.

Who knows? Maybe in future I might be more involved with these sort of things. I can’t tell yet if I simply have an interest or if I have a passion for this.

I’ll cover that in a different post some other time.

I thought I’d better update a bit since I’ve been rather quiet for the last couple of weeks.

2 weeks ago, I attended the SPDJ outing at Sentosa. It was actually quite okay. I guess a bit of sun once in a while isn’t that bad. I talked to some people that I hadn’t really interacted with before. Some of the new members did seem more comfortable at the beach than they had been back when we barely knew one another.

Kudos to the sub-comm., you all did a great job!

I left a little earlier to have dinner with Marian and AJ. AJ mentioned he was going shopping with his friend the following Saturday to take advantage of the Great Singapore Sale, so us girls decided to tag along.

So Saturday came and AJ ended up spending the most out of all of us even though they were there to revamp the other guy’s wardrobe. Haha. Eventually, we headed down to the Heeren where we spotted an event going on, the finals of Singapore’s 1st B-Boy Championship 2007.

It was cool to be able to see the judges Mouse (winner of the UK Championships 2006) and Unico (of the famous Rock Steady Crew) demo a bit before the actual competition.

Guess who, of all people, was playing the music? DJ Rattle! He was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. AJ’s friend was a little star-struck, since this was the first time he was seeing him up close.

Marian had to leave early but another girl joined us later. She was a little hyper and I was swept along with it, going on a little shopping spree of my own. She didn’t join us for dinner, so just the three of us headed to Timbre on AJ’s suggestion. Although the food was great, I felt really broke after that. Everything felt triple-priced (a main course costs around $15-17!).

What made up for it was that they were having Power Jam 2007 auditions while we were there, so we got a free show. We got to sit directly in front of the stage due to some tactical seat-switching. Heh heh.

Power Jam 2007

Halfway through the event, it started raining really, REALLY heavily. The hosts joked about how everyone needed an umbrella, ella, ella, ay, ay, ay (I really hate that song). The rain only got heavier by the time the event was over. Being the young and crazy (and broke) people that we were, we ran through the rain all the way to the MRT station. I dropped my slipper halfway while crossing the road and had to go back for it. It was strange to realise that I was actually having too much fun to actually care about being embarrassed that I looked like a mess.

I’m looking forward to going out with them again (to a cheaper place though). I hope we can arrange something sometime soon.

Moved!

Hiya!

If you’re reading this, chances are you already know me (or came across my old blog before).

I’ve decided to use WordPress as it has more features than Pitas and it doesn’t crash at random times.

I’m probably going to be vlogging a bit as well now that I can tag. Whee. Now you’ll see a different side of me I guess, heh.
